Animal Magnetism: Viking Sword authenticated

Following the IG account of a local amateur archaeologist specializing in privy excavation and magnet fishing, I’ve seen my share of vandalized rental e-scooters, stolen bicycles, and the occasional handgun pulled out of the murky waters of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Elsewhere, however, one occasionally finds other treasures—such as a rusty Viking sword that was pulled from the River Cherwell near Enslow in England last fall.

The weapon has now been authenticated, with an estimated age of about 1,100-1,200 years, which would roughly place it in the chronological neighborhood of Byrhtnoð and the Battle of Maldon (991 AD).
