German-style foil with clues to the use of the leather pad…

This is an early German-style foil, as would be used by the Kreussler school of thrust fencing. This particular specimen has the leather pad mounted behind the crossguard. The curvature in the leather, imprinted by sweaty fingers through heavy usage, provides us with first-hand clues as to how this weapon was held.

The blade is flat, without the flared shoulders typical of later models. It bears the word “+SOLINGEN+” hand-cut into the metal.
