If it weren’t for the tacky poem…

 

This is one of the first photos of a female épée fencer… or at least a girl dressed appropriately for the part. Note her billowing, well, whatever that is she’s wearing. (Anyone who knows the proper term for this garment, please post it below!) Like many early photos, this one was sold as a postcard. The épée is an upscale model sold in France between 1880 and 1920.
