An Assault At Foils

This bout could have taken place at Henry Angelo’s salle at St. James Street…

The English caricaturist and cartoonist George Cruikshank (27 September, 1792 — 1 February, 1878) created several fencing scenes. This hand-colored copperplate depicts a bout at foils. (Please not the use of the simple masks!)

As a member of Henry Angelo’s circle, he also drew the frontispiece of Angelo’s Pic Nic, which depicts the by the rotund scion of the fencing master dynasty holding a singlestick.
