Happy Viking Sword Day, that is…
A few lucky construction workers in Melhus, Norway, stumbled over a piece of rusted metal that made their hearts beat faster…
“Well-preserved” may be a relative expression in the world of excavated swords, but Norwegian archaeologist Anne Haug thinks the find is “extremely exciting.” Apparently, the sword still has some wood and fabric remnants, possibly from a scabbard that once went with it.
We can only read every third word in Norwegian, and guess wildly at the meaning of the rest, but the sword was fund about six feet deep in clay, in an area where several ancient burial sites were razed in the early 1800′s. Construction work has been temporarily suspended.
