Cavalry Saber Practice of Belgian Lancers

When Italian-style sports sabers had replaced cavalry sabers even in the Belgian cavalry…

Windows open to let in some fresh air, members of the 1st Lancers practice saber fencing at their salle d’armes in Spa, Belgium. Several factors stand out:These cavalrymen no longer exercise with the heavier military swords of the 19th century, but with Italian-style sports sabers. Their fencing clothes are strangely haphazard and not at all uniform. And the “planche” or fencing strip is indeed made of planks… and quite short ath that.
